‘JUST give him the Puskas award!’

Riley McGree’s insane scorpion kick goal in the Newcastle Jets’ semi-final win over Melbourne City is being touted as the best strike anywhere in world football this season - and by some as the greatest ever scored.

Video of the outrageous finish was even uploaded to Twitter by FIFA.com - who boast 12 million followers - and has since been viewed 1.21 million times in just 17 hours, at time of writing.

Within minutes of the goal happening, it was uploaded by UK TV channel BT Sport’s football account, with the caption “one of the most amazing goals you will ever, ever see,” also adding “surely the Puskas Award is in the bag.”

Cristiano Ronaldo’s stunning overhead effort in Real Madrid’s Champions league quarter final against Juventus was previously backed as a stand out effort in the race for the award - given out for world football’s best strike in any given year - but many are tipping the 19-year-old Jet to pip even five-time Ballon d’Or winner CR7.

BT Sport presenter Jules Breach posted “We’ve not seen [Mohamed] Salah do one of these yet have we!”

The strike was reported all over the world, with the BBC, ESPN, The Daily Mail, The Sun and Eurosport amongst the networks to take note of the A-League strike.

The Sun ran with the headline “Newcastle Jets star scores best goal you will ever see with stunning edge-of-the-box scorpion kick.”

The best ever. Let that sink in.

Fox Sports’ commentator Brenton Speed immediately tipped the goal to go global, and the response has been nothing short of extraordinary - putting the A-League well and truly on the map.

McGree’s incredible effort was compared to Olivier Giroud’s 2016-17 Puskas Award winning effort as well as Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s remarkable effort from last season but by and large people believe the Aussie teen has trumped both Premier League stars.

To put the cherry on the cake, the man himself weighed in on Twitter, cheekily posting “Upon watching the replay I actually think I meant that...!”

Bravo Riley, your phenomenal antics have brought the A-League remarkable exposure and shown the insanity of moments the league is capable of producing - as good as any on the planet!
