A-League Semi-final Ultimate Guide: Sydney FC v Melbourne Victory

Recommended Posts

IT’S arguably the A-League’s biggest rivalry, and now the big blue will have a new chapter written its history as Sydney FC and Melbourne Victory do battle in a semi-final.

After last season’s epic grand final between the sides, a compelling clash is expected between the minor premiers and a visiting Victory spearheaded by the ultimate big game player Besart Berisha.

Berisha’s stunning overhead winner against Adelaide has earned his side the right to challenge the undisputed best team in the country, and now Kevin Muscat’s men are backing themselves to pull off a big upset.

However, Sydney FC have won their last seven matches against the Victory, including their penalty shootout win in last year’s decider, and Graham Arnold will back his side to extend that record – but if they don’t, the match will be his last in charge of the Sky Blues before taking over the Socceroos after the World Cup.

Sydney have never lost a post-season match at Allianz Stadium, while the Melburnians have lost their last five finals clashes outside of Victoria.

The stage is set for another epic clash between the league’s two biggest clubs.

WHEN AND WHERE IS IT?
Sydney FC (1st) earned their home final and will now host Victory (4th) after the visitors beat Adelaide United in the first week of the finals – the match will be played at Allianz Stadium.

Kick-off is scheduled for 7:50pm AEST on Saturday April 28.

HOW CAN YOU WATCH IT?
Watch the match on Fox Sports 501 from 7:50pm AEST, and enjoy the pre-game build up from 7pm.

WHAT THEY SAID
Sydney FC Captain Alex Brosque: “We know how tough games against Melbourne have been in the past so to have seven wins in a row over them, no doubt it’s playing on their mind. It’s on our mind,” the 34-year-old said.

“They’ll maintain the Semi Final is a different game of football.

“But in front of our home crowd and with our home record we’re very confident.”

Melbourne Victory star Rhys Williams: “They’re up for the taking,’’ Williams said.

“The three games this season we’ve actually played some of our best stuff against them, we just haven’t finished them off so hopefully a fourth time lucky.

“Not at all (doubt doesn’t creep in). Every time we’ve played them, it’s not as if they’ve flogged us or played us off the park — in my opinion anyway.

“It’s been about them taking their chances and we didn’t on the day.

“The magnitude of the game is a big thing for us. We knew tonight they would come out as well and we woke up late on.

“(Saturday) we have to be at our best for 90-95 minutes to make sure we come out (on top).”

WHY SYDNEY WILL WIN
The same reason they’ve been the best team all year – sheer quality headed by the league’s best player.

Adrian Mierzejewski has been the standout performer in this season’s A-League and with the help of golden boot winner Bobo, he’ll look to bury the Victory with goals and attacking class.

Sydney boast quality across every position, and will be backing their stars to perform and earn them the chance to play for back to back A-League crowns.

WHY VICTORY WILL WIN
Big game heroics.

Besart Berisha is the A-League’s premier finals player, as was shown last weekend via his ridiculous overhead winner against Adelaide.

No one has scored as many finals goals as Berisha, and he’ll be motivated to extend his prolific post-season streak against his club’s biggest rivals.

Add in the quality off Leroy George, who has enjoyed an impressive first season at the club, as well as the industry and speed of Kosta Barbarouses and it’s a front three who will be a handful even for the league’s best defence.
