Good Old Games, digital delivery embraces retrogaming

Recommended Posts

NewsThe Polish producer/publisher CD Projekt have had the nice idea of focusing two great trends of the PC gamers community, the one majority (digital delivery) and the other marginal (retrogaming) to build up a new business, that should turn real for the next September under the appearances of GOG.com, acronym meaning for Good Old Games.

That the content and software delivery (in this case videogames) in digital and “diskless” format is a prevailing interest of developers and publishers since is a matter of fact, demonstrated mostly but not only by the Steam success, the platform that Valve Software has transformed in a multi-millionaire affair and that presently puts on sale first-rate videogames developed by software house as Capcom, Eidos, Rockstar, Ubisoft and the once “archenemy” in the FPS field id Software.

Steam is first of all interested in recent software, on the contrary CD Projekt wants to call attention to the audience of those gamers with a few years more, which have maybe abandoned the PC to switch to the less problematic and expensive console or with an “history” and a videogaming career on the shoulders yet. Good Old Games, and the title says it all, intends in the end to offer a possibly broad games stock to the ones actually used to lost themselves among the brooks of abandonware and the incompatibility of the retro software with NT class operative systems, inconsistencies capable of taking away the sleep and the will to replay to that old title so much loved some years ago…

The most interesting feature of the GOG project is in fact the update of the game code, or at least of those parts that don’t get on well with the modern OSs: the Polish developers will put themselves on work to reshape all the software sold on GOG, and CD Projekt guarantees upfront the full compatibility of delivered titles with Windows XP and Windows Vista.

A real manna, considering the epic undertakings often needed to make the old videogames work on XP – not to mention Vista. If this would not be enough to let GOG become very much interesting, a price system between 5,99 and 9,99 dollars and the absolute lack of whatever DRM protection schemeinserted into the software take care of transforming the portal in the most important happening of the last years regarding retrogaming, and one of the most significant for videogaming in general.

And furthermore there will be the availability of extra stuff (guides and walkthroughs, mp3 soundtracks, wallpapers, artworks and additional contents for games), the post-download support and the chance to re-download the bought packages all the desired times and from any PC.

The GOG aim is ambitious, and forecasts of being able to offer an all-comprehensive collection of videogaming glories from the Eightees, the Ninetees and the 2000’s. At the present condition CD Projekt claims to have signed agreements with Interplay and Codemasters, which thing allows to have in list titles of certain interest like Fallout and TOCA Race Driver 3 yet, and to be involved in negotiation with some other publishers.

“Our main goal is to create a user-friendly website with the best classic PC games at a price considered impossible to achieve“, stated the GOG managing director Adam Oldakowski. A website that would also become a landmark for the endless retrogamers audience – of which who writes boasts to be an honored and honorary member– building with time a community of involved fans and active contributors that don’t limit themselves to download the games.

Compatibility with NT class Windows, a price very competitive with piracy and free download and the comfort of being able to play as soon as possible without having to wait for weeks for the shipment of the collection CD just bought on eBay: what to say more, GOG is already on the top of my list of things to test properly as soon as I’ll have the chance

As already said, timeline talks about an initiation for September. For which would do it, it’s presently possible to register one’s e-mail address on the GOG homepage, hoping to enter in the private betatesting program beginning from the 1st of August. A great way, for my own concern, to spend the holidays playing to the old games with which I still waste fortunes on e-commerce websites and on the usual eBay
