One American Pie Star Originally Thought The Movie Was A Porno

As a coming of age teen romance, American Pie is fondly remembered. Who hasn't gone through those awkward teen years trying to make sense of changing bodies and hormones? American Pie as a franchise is also notable for being totally raunchy and unafraid to "go there", as the title comes from one of the characters literally trying to have sex with a pie. It's pretty easy then to see why Thomas Ian Nicholas, who played Kevin in the movie, originally thought that he was up for a part in a porno.

So I open up the first page and it was Kevin and Vicki, and Vicki was giving Kevin some instructions on how to use his fingers. I immediately closed the script, threw it in the trash, called my agent, said, 'Why are you sending me porn? No thank you.'

The 90s were a different time, and I guess it was pretty uncommon to read a script that featured teen sex with little subtly. In an interview with PeopleTV (via Entertainment Weekly) Thomas Ian Nicholas and Tara Reid, who starred as couple Kevin and Vicky, looked back on the 1999 comedy American Pie. On his first reaction to the script, Nicholas wasn't a huge fan, and apparently threw the script out after only reading a small amount of it. He then called his agent to complain, thinking that he was actually reading the script for a porn film. One assumes that his agent then had to explain what the movie was really about.

Obviously American Pie isn't porn, but it does have a striking amount of similarities. It's about four teenage boys trying to have sex with their girlfriends on prom night. And one of them has sex with a MILF, which is maybe 55% of all porno plots. Then there's Jason Biggs character, who tries to have sex with a pie. Additionally, he almost has sex with the hot exchange student, and its webcast to his entire school, so I guess he technically makes a porno. But the film itself hardly qualifies.

All that being said, American Pie isn't porn, and it went on to be a smash hit with numerous sequels and direct to DVD spin-offs. (Ironically, this also happens to successful porn movies). The most recent movie to come out of the franchise is American Reunion, which featured all of the main characters coming together for one more hurrah.
