Bob Dylan has launched his own whiskey line, called Heaven’s Door.

The star filed for a trademark on the term “bootleg whiskey” in 2015, which caught the eye of liquor entrepreneur Marc Bushala and led to the new collection.

The Heaven’s Door line includes three whiskeys, as the New York Times reports – a straight rye, a straight bourbon, and double-barrelled whiskey.

In a statement to the paper, Dylan said: “We both [Dylan and Bushala] wanted to create a collection of American whiskeys that, in their own way, tell a story. I’ve been travelling for decades, and I’ve been able to try some of the best spirits that the world of whiskey has to offer. This is great whiskey.”

The label for the whiskeys features the silhouettes of wagon wheels and crows. The standard line of Heaven’s Door will be for sale for $50-$80 (£36-£58) a bottle. Every year, a limited edition Bootleg Series will be released in ceramic bottles decorated with the musician’s oil and watercolour paintings. The first one will be released next year and will cost approximately $300 (£218).

“Dylan has these qualities that actually work well for a whiskey,” Bushala said. “He has great authenticity. He is a quintessential American. He does things the way he wants to do them. I think these are good attributes for a super-premium whiskey as well.”

He added: “For people who are surprised that he did a whiskey, I guess they don’t really know Dylan. People who know him expect him to do things they would never expect.”

Meanwhile, the icon has contributed to a new compilation that turns classic tracks into “same-sex wedding anthems”.

‘Universal Love’ was released earlier this month (April 6) and features the likes of Dylan, St Vincent, Kesha, Bloc Party‘s Kele Okereke, Death Cab For Cutie‘s Ben Gibbard and Valerie June. For the six-track EP, Dylan takes on American classic ‘She’s Funny That Way’ (popularised by Frank Sinatra and Nat King Cole), changing the song to be ‘He’s Funny That Way’.
