Troye Sivan on discovering his sexuality: "I cried when I realised Zac Efron was really hot"

Troye Sivan has discussed coming to terms with his sexuality in a new interview, saying that he cried and felt “really sick” when he first knew he was attracted to men.

The South African-born Australian singer, 22, came out publicly in a YouTube video in 2013, having shared the news with his family three years prior.

In a new interview with Attitude, Sivan says: “I remember I cried when I realised that I thought Zac Efron was really hot, [when I was] aged 13 or something like that.”

“I cried. And felt really sick… It wasn’t just: ‘This is a little crush on a boy or something like that: I’m not just interested in this boy – I think that’s he hot.’ And that was weird for me.”

The ‘My My My!’ hitmaker goes on to speak about the “hyper-sexualised environments” of online dating, saying that it “creeped” him out when first experiencing this world as a 17 year-old.

“At the same time I really don’t have any regrets,” he adds. “Maybe I wasn’t ever truly scared, just really uncomfortable… I’m not looking back at those experiences in a negative or a positive light”.

Sivan is currently dating model Jacob Bixenman, telling Attitude: “He’s got like a kind of energy about him, a magnetic sort of energy. I think people can’t help but love him. He’s just got one of those personalities that draws people in… It’s kind of like having your best friend around all the time, which is really nice.”

“I think I’m monogamous by nature and I really enjoy that. Maybe I can be a jealous person and, I don’t know, it just feels what’s right for me.”
