Benidorm death plunge Brit Kirsty Maxwell’s friends recall horror moment

FRIENDS of hotel plunge victim Kirsty Maxwell have recalled the horror moment they saw her body lying by their pool.

The 27-year-old bank worker, of Livingston, West Lothian, mysteriously fell 100ft from a balcony in Benidorm while on her pal Carolynn Burke's hen party.

Her devastated friends have spoken about the tragedy at the Payma apartments for the first time exactly a year on from her death, as they return to Spain to hunt for answers.

All four of the women described it as the "worst day of our lives" as they told of the moment they realised she was missing.

Bride Carolynn, 29, said: “My mum was banging on my door at 10.30am and then she burst into the room with a man shouting ‘someone’s missing, someone’s missing — there’s been an accident’.

“Lesley-Anne got up and ran to the window and looked. When she came back she said, ‘it’s Kirsty’.”

“I said to the policeman, ‘Is there any hope? Is she in the hospital?’

“But he shook his head and I got up and ran out the room.

“We had five rooms next to ours and we still had to check if Kirsty was there but she wasn’t.

“I don’t think any of us will ever be the same again.”

Lesley-Anne Watson, 28, said: "I looked and she was just lying there — I was shaking and freezing.”

Kerry Langton, 27, said she had put Kirsty to bed that night, and recalled her last words to her tragic pal were "Goodnight, love you.

Grieving retail manager Lesley-Anne admitted it was “so hard” jetting to the resort again.

She said: “There’s not a day it doesn’t go through your head, ‘what if we stayed somewhere different? What if we came on a different night?’.

“We couldn’t have been more responsible that night, we were dancing on this podium having the time of our lives, having a laugh.

“I made sure she got home okay that night.”

She said the aftermath was “hell” as the party tried to come to terms with the heartache — before breaking the devastating news to Kirsty’s husband Adam, 28, who she had recently married.

She said: “All 20 of us just sat in a room and we couldn’t believe what had happened.

“Adam phoned and he said he’d had a strange call and he thought it was a prank.

“I had to tell him it wasn’t and I remember him breaking down.

“It was horrific, I replay that conversation in my head every day.”

The four friends, who flew to Benidorm on Friday, handed out flyers and questionnaires as they seek answers.

Kerry said Carolynn’s wedding two months later was filled with “sadness and happiness”.

She said: “Kirsty was one of the bridesmaids so it was obvious she wasn’t there.

“She wouldn’t want Carolynn’s day to be filled with regret.”

Suzanne Lothian, 28, said Kirsty should be remembered as “beautiful inside and out”.

Suzanne added: “Coming out here was a mixture of emotions. I felt ill and apprehensive but we’ve got to do what we have to so we can get the answers and justice Kirsty deserves.

“She was the kindest person, funny and I can’t even put into words how amazing she was. We all reference ourselves as family, as soulmates, we were so close.

“Carolynn’s wedding was still beautiful but it was obvious someone was missing, and that was how much she was missed.”

Kirsty went to bed in her 9th floor flat at around 4am and later woke and left the room - clothed but barefoot.
