Is Google Planning To Kill Android? Will Fuchsia OS Replace Android?

Recommended Posts

Ever since Google started teasing its mysterious Fuchsia operating system in 2016, it has been making headlines now and then. There have been repeated rumors of Google looking to use Fuchsia in place of its Android and Chrome OS operating systems.

In a recent development, XDA Developers’ Mishaal Rahman spotted  Fuschia OS in AOSP’s ART (Android runtime) branch. This finding is very crucial for the future of Google’s smartphone plans. This feature, theoretically, means that Android apps would be able to run on Fuchsia operating system.

Down the line, if Google plans to replace the Android operating system with Fuchsia, this functionality will be the most critical one. It’ll allow the users to use the same Android apps on their Fuchsia-powered devices.

Moreover, even if Google simply presents Fuchsia as an alternative to Android, it would also make sense to make the apps compatible. Growing a whole new developer army and luring it to develop Fuschia apps isn’t something easy. In the past, we’ve seen Microsoft failing at its Windows Mobile efforts due to lack of interest from developers.

As the reports are suggesting, Fuchsia could turn out to be an all-rounder operating system that would run on smartphones, tablets, and computers. So that’s another reason why Google might push it as the next big operating system. Google also has an array of smart devices; Fuchsia could also find a home there as well.

If you’re wondering when will Fuchsia pass its experimental phase and mature as a usable operating system, we’re sorry to say that such details are scarce at the moment. We’ll just have to wait and keep an eye on Fuchsia’s GitHub repo for continuous development.
