Making a movie can be a stressful job, but the material of a given film can definitely impact the intensity of the filmmaking process. In fact, that was the case with Luca Guadagnino's upcoming remake of Dario Argento's Suspiria, as Dakota Johnson has officially revealed that starring in the film forced her to go into therapy to cope with the material. In a recent interview, the Fifty Shades Freed actress explained:

[It] no lie, fucked me up so much that I had to go to therapy.

Although Dakota Johnson wouldn't go into detail about the exact nature of what specifically messed her up, it's easy to imagine that this film isn't quite as easy to handle as the Fifty Shades movies. Like the original, Suspiria will center on an American dancer who goes to study at a mysterious academy in Germany and uncovers a disturbing and demonic secret in the process. Things only get deadlier and more terrifying from there, and according to Johnson's comments to Elle in her recent interview: the process left her deeply disturbed.

Dakota Johnson's remarks about the disturbing nature of Suspiria also make quite a bit of sense when we consider the gruesome material that will appear in the film. Though we haven't seen an official trailer for the project just yet, footage was show off last week at CinemaCon in Las Vegas, and it promised an absolutely gut-wrenching horror experience. In the sequence shown, Dakota Johnson's character performed a ballet routine under the guidance of a teacher played by Doctor Strange's Tilda Swinton. In the scene, we saw that another dancer in another area began to mimic the movements made by Johnson's character, contorting and twisting in bizarre ways as Johnson danced. By the end of the scene (which was shown during a lunch event at CinemaCon, no less) Johnson's dancing eventually killed the other dancer and quite literally tore her apart. Yeah, we would need therapy, too.

Of course, it's hard to feel surprised that Suspiria did this to Dakota Johnson when we already know so much about the horrific legacy of the source material. Dario Argento's original Suspiria has become widely regarded as one of the best horror films ever made by diehard fans of the genre, and its balance of trippy visuals and creepy music has influenced an entire generation of scary movies. Fans associate the Suspiria brand with that level of terrifying and scarring horror, so it arguably only makes sense that the How to be Single actress had to go to therapy after taking part in the film.

CinemaBlend will keep you posted with any and all relevant updates related to the upcoming Suspiria remake as new details related to the film become available to us. The film is set to debut this fall, so make sure to check it out when it finally premieres and take a look at our movie premiere guide to see what other films are set to debut in 2018!
