Conrad Hotels Maldives Rangali Island resort to open first underwater villa

Most of us would be more than happy with an ocean view out of our hotel room window.

But imagine not only having a view of the ocean, but a view of what’s in it too.

Hotel chain Conrad is opening what is believed to be the world’s first underwater villa in the Maldives this year.

Its Maldives Rangali Island resort will have an “underwater residence” five metres beneath the water by the end of the year, giving guests the chance to wake up with a view usually only seen by snorkellers and divers.

A curved dome will give an 180 degree view of the marine life and images of the bathroom show coral only centimetres beyond the glass walls.

The villa is costing the equivalent of a whopping $20 million to create and, judging by the pictures, it’ll have all the trimmings.

The Muruka room (named after the Dhievehi word for Coral) will include room for nine people, a powder room, a gym and an infinity pool.

There’s even a butler’s quarters, 24-hour butler service and a security quarters - lest your staff need to join you on your trip.

As you can imagine, the room will come at a cost. Given rooms in the hotel’s other villas cost up to $9500 a night, you’ll probably need a small fortune for a night with the fishes.
