The Original Destiny Soundtrack, Music Of The Spheres, Will Get An Official Release

If you're a fan of the original soundtrack for the first Destiny game and you've always wanted a legal copy of your own, you're in luck. Bungie has announced that a licensed version of "Music of the Spheres," will soon be made available.

This news comes to us from Reddit, where members of the Destiny community expressed concern over the fact that the free version of "Music of the Spheres" was disappearing from the internet. To be clear, that free version was being made illegally, as Bungie owns the rights to the songs.

Following complaints from fans over the disappearance of the soundtrack, Bungie's Cozmo23 stepped into the conversation to explain that MotS will receive an official release and that more details are on the way.

For those of you who don't follow the real-world Destiny lore, there's actually quite a bit more backstory to how this all went down.

Back when the first Destiny was being developed, Marty O'Donnel, Michael Salvatori and Paul McCartney (yes, THE Paul McCartney) were brought in to work on the game's soundtrack. That version of the soundtrack eventually became known as "Music of the Spheres," as a falling out led to Bungie scrapping the original soundtrack in favor of creating a new one from the ground up. O'Donnel actually went on to sue Bungie for unpaid wages and such, a case that the developer eventually lost.

Anyway, fast forward to a few months ago and the original soundtrack made its way online via YouTube and various other media sharing sites. Oddly enough, Bungie never took action against the illegal versions of the soundtrack being made available online, even though they still own rights to it.

Last week, the soundtrack finally started disappearing from its online sources as Bungie took action to have them removed. This got the speculation train rolling, with Reddit user OS_EpsilonTEMP stepping in to clear things up. It turns out that, if the illegal version of the soundtrack was left online unchallenged by Bungie long enough, then they would actually lose those rights. With that deadline looming, Bungie decided to finally step in and scrub the internet clean of the MotS music. As grumblings over this move have grown, Bungie has now stepped in to explain that, yes, the soundtrack will be back and, yes, it will be a legal version of the soundtrack this time around.

What's extra humorous here is that even O'Donnel was not aware of this fact, as he pointed out in the Reddit thread that he had not been notified of the move by Bungie. We can only assume that, if Bungie is going to sell or give away the soundtrack, O'Donnel probably has to be looped into the conversation at some point. We're not too clear on the legal aspects here but, either way, it sounds like the original Destiny soundtrack will respawn like a Guardian at some point in the future.
