Studs and duds in West Coast’s statement win over Richmond

The studs...

ELLIOT YEO
Produced a third quarter to remember. Fans were concerned that his day was over when he left the field with a knee injury earlier in the game. But he changed the match with his third term. It included three free kicks for holding the ball after crunching tackles and 1.1. He also had 11 disposals and four clearances in a stunning quarter of footy. Yeo finished with 29 disposals and 10 clearances for the day.

JACK DARLING
He’smade plenty of statements this season but none bigger than kicking six goals against the reigning premier. Darling challenged Richmond in many ways. He was a beacon inside 50 when it came to marking and was happy to put his body on the line for the team. Darling took 15 mark and six of those were contested. He is playing with supreme confidence and is now at the peak of his powers.

JEREMY MCGOVERN
McGovern’s marking was influential. There were times when the Tigers simply couldn’t get the ball past him. McGovern didn’t play against Greater Western Sydney last week and he provided the perfect reminder of why clubs are prepared to pay top dollar to sign him. McGovern repeatedly took intercept marks and forced Richmond to adjust the way they attacked.

NIC NAITANUI
The big ruckman returned from suspension and was at his intimidating best both in the ruck and around the ground. His brutal tackling sent a message to Dustin Martin and Toby Nankervis. He also gave West Coast’s midfielders plenty if silver service with his superb tapping. The week off may have done him good. He certainly looked hungry to have a massive impact.

JACK RIEWOLDT
His efforts inside 50 for Richmond were outstanding. He fought and scrapped to win as many contests as possible. The Coleman medallist was rewarded with two goals during the second quarter and he also played a key part in another for Jason Castagna. Riewoldt also kicked one goal during the third term and two during the final quarter. His ability to compete set him apart for the Tigers.

The duds...

ALEX RANCE
The best key defender in the game was under pressure from all quarters. He ended up finding a fair bit of the ball, but he just couldn’t contain Jack Darling or Josh Kennedy. The delivery made it hard for a backman, and Rance just could never settle into a job.

NATHAN BROAD
Similar to Rance, it just wasn’t a day for the defenders. The former Swan Districts player finished with a game-low five disposals.
