Andrew Fifita declares ‘I would play for free’

Recommended Posts

ANDREW Fifita has declared he will donate his State of Origin earnings to charity if he gets the chance to win his first series with NSW.

The Cronulla prop make the declaration to Triple M following the Sharks’ win over Canterbury in the Shire on Sunday.

He says he is prepared to donate his fee for game one — which would be $30,000 — to charity and is prepared to play for free if selected by the Blues.

Fifita has never won an Origin series, having missed the successful 2014 campaign with NSW.

His dream appeared over when he pledged his allegiance to Tonga only a couple of months ago, seemingly turning his back on his state and Australia.

But Blues adviser Greg Alexander revealed to foxsports.com.au on Friday the selectors were considering bringing Fifita in from the cold.

“If they can make it happen I wouldn’t say not to it,” Fifita said on Sunday.

“But for the international I will be with Tonga no matter what. It’s about growing the game.

“There’s nothing more in the world I want to win than a State of Origin series. I’ve never won one before and I would love to win one.

“I wouldn’t let the team down. My heart is through and through a Blue.

“If they can make it happen I’m not going to just go out there ... I would pay for free. I would donate my money to charity.

“I don’t mind (about the money) as long we get that series win, I get that under my belt then I’ve done pretty much everything in the game.”

Fifita will make himself unavailable for Origin II so he can represent Tonga in the mid-season Test.

But he has declared his availability for games one and three if NSW want to pick him.

NSW will announce their game one team on May 28.
