1542: The death of De Soto

Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto dies while searching for gold along the Mississippi River.

1881: American Red Cross is found

Clara Barton establishes the American Red Cross, also known as the American National Red Cross in the United States. It is a humanitarian organization that provides emergency assistance, disaster relief, and disaster preparedness education.

1924: Leopold and Loeb murders cousin Bobby Franks

In a case that drew much notoriety, 14-year-old Bobby Franks is murdered in a "thrill killing" carried out by University of Chicago students Nathan Leopold Jr. and Richard Loeb (Bobby's cousin).

1927: American pilot Charles Lindbergh lands in Paris

Charles A. Lindbergh lands his Spirit of St. Louis monoplane near Paris, completing the first solo airplane flight across the Atlantic Ocean in 33 1/2 hours.
