Paul Burrell warns Meghan Markle is ‘trouble’ for the royal family

PAUL Burrell has warned that Meghan Markle is everything the royal family is “frightened of” and that the new Duchess will shake up life for The Firm.

The former royal butler said Meghan would cause “ripples in the royal pond” after her star-studded wedding to Prince Harry at Windsor Castle, The Sun reports.

The new Duchess of Sussex is a 36-year-old American actress, from dual heritage, and a divorcee.

During an interview with Good Morning Britain today, Burrell, who served as Princess Diana’s butler, said it was Meghan’s colourful past that could cause problems for some of the royals.

He said: “She is all of the things that the royal family is frightened of.

“She’s mixed race, she’s American, she’s a divorcee and that is everything that we have to embrace to move forward.”

Burrell also said that Diana would have “loved” Meghan, before adding: “There will be ripples in the royal pond, yes there will, and things will happen but I think she’s steady, she’s solid, she’s a good person to enter the royal family.

“She’s served her apprenticeship in Hollywood on that stage, now she’s entered the world stage and joined the cast of the biggest soap opera on the world.”

Burrell, who also served as footman to The Queen during a long career in the royal household, was at the royal wedding as an adviser to US media.

It was reported on Saturday that he had clashed with security in Windsor — but a source later said he was simply chatting to staff as he made his way into the media tent.

Dressed in a smart grey wedding suit and pink tie, he was later seen inside St George’s Chapel, where the ceremony took place.

However, due to his stormy relationship with the royal family many questioned why he was there.

Burrell has infuriated Buckingham Palace after betraying the family’s trust with a series of headline grabbing stunts.

The butler, who described himself as Princess Diana’s “rock”, came under fire in 2008, during an inquest into Diana’s death.

It had just emerged he secretly copied letters between her and other members of the Royal Family.

He told the hearing it was for “historical importance”, but was accused of being a “porous rock”.

In 2001, police arrested Burrell and raided his Cheshire home over claims he had taken items belonging to Diana, Prince William and Prince Charles including CDs, LPs, photo albums and designer clothes.

Burrell was eventually charged with three counts of theft, but the cast collapsed after just nine days after the Queen intervened to halt the trial.

Thousands flocked to Windsor to take part in the royal wedding celebrations on Saturday, while millions of others tuned in to watch the ceremony unfold on TV.

The modern wedding featured a rip-roaring sermon from American priest Michael Curry and a moving rendition of Stand By Me by a black gospel choir.

Burrell said Princess Diana would have “loved” the modern ceremony.

He told Good Morning Britain hosts Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid: “But the rest of the royals weren’t ready for it. It was a surprise. I don’t think any of them had seen something like that.

“I don’t think St George’s Chapel had seen anything like that in its entire history.

“It was refreshing, it was diverse, it was different. It was exactly what that couple wanted and exactly what we need from the royal family.”
