Sekai Project announced at Anime Central 2018 that they will be publishing Korean visual novel My Girlfriend is a Mermaid!? on the Switch. The Switch version of My Girlfriend is a Mermaid!? is an upgraded port of the original, released for Android phones in 2014. The Switch port will come with new scenarios, use Live2D animation, and feature a new opening song sung by the three main heroines of the game. There’s no release window or price specified at this time.Developed by mobile studio Talesshop, My Girlfriend is a Mermaid!? is the story of a young man who moves back to his hometown for the summer. There, he reconnects with his childhood friend Ion, who has been transformed into a mermaid. She introduces him to Petakko, a mermaid with amnesia, and Rin, a priestess who watches over the mermaids. All three are tied to a mysterious legend, which the protagonist must unravel over the course of his strange summer vacation. A 12+ visual novel with romance elements, it appears to have been adapted from a Korean light novel, published back in 2012.

My Girlfriend is a Mermaid!? is the latest mobile title to get ported to Switch. You may recall that Sekai Project is bringing A Magical High School Girl to the Switch as well. Sekai Project may be looking to test out the Switch market with mobile games, before porting larger games to the console. Indeed, My Girlfriend is a Mermaid!? is Sekai Project’s first official VN to make it to the Switch. While it is not the first English-translated VN to make it to the console, not by a long shot, it represents just another move by Japanese developers and publishers to adopt the Switch

You may also recall news reports recently that Sony will be ending production of physical Vita cartridges, effectively moving the Vita into end-of-life support. With North America and Europe left high and dry by Sony, it makes sense that publishers would move away from the Vita, including Sekai Project who had been one of the longtime supporters of the Vita. Still, the niche appeal of Sony’s oft-maligned handheld gave it enduring appeal, although more of that audience and its publishers seem to be moving towards Nintendo’s new hybrid console. We’ll see Sekai Project publish My Girlfriend is a Mermaid!? sometime in the future.
