Megablast lifts Damian Browne’s spirits after tough week

Recommended Posts

DAMIAN Browne ended what he described as the worst week of his riding career with the consolation of winning the Caloundra Cup for the third time on Kiwi mudlark Megablast on Saturday.

Browne was suspended for two months on Wednesday, with stewards ruling he failed to give Fighting Teo every chance in a race at Caloundra last month.

The usually cool and composed Group 1-winning rider embraced wife Kim after the race, unmasking what had clearly been a taxing time for him and the family since the suspension was handed down.

When asked if it had been the worst week of his career, Browne said “yes”.

“It’s been a pretty hard week. It’s taken a toll on me and my family,” he said. “It’s nice to have an upside at the end of the week.

“I was pretty apprehensive coming today. I knew once I got here it would be different. Instincts take over and do what you know what to do.

“Winning this race gives us something to drink to and celebrate tonight.”

Browne has owned this day over the years, winning the Guineas three times, one Glasshouse and now three Cups.

For Kiwi trainer Nigel Tiley, it was not only a maiden win at the Sunshine Coast, but in fact his first in Australia. Tiley rode with success when visiting Australia as a jockey, most notably the Sydney autumn of 1982, where he won the Doncaster, Sydney Cup, Tancred, Queen Elizabeth and All Aged Stakes.

He finished riding in 1992 and nowadays has 40 horses in work at Pukekohe. “It’s actually the first winner I’ve had in Australia. I’m going to be coming back more now!” he said.

Megablast missed the Brisbane Cup after knocking himself in his box, but is back to fitness now and will stay on to run in the Queensland Cup (3200m) at Caloundra in a fortnight.

“We weren’t too sure what had happened to him,” Tiley said. “He must have got cast in his box. He never really missed any work. We might as well hang around. If all goes well I will be able to keep him up to the mark.”

Chris Munce’s tough stayer First Crush once again ran well, turning the tables on his Ipswich Cup conqueror Tradesman as the pair filled the minor placings.

Meanwhile, Ringo’s A Rockstar will also be at the Queensland Cup meeting, chasing another 1000m success over a course he has built a real affinity with.

Ringo’s A Rockstar was well backed to start $4.60 to win the Open Handicap and came with a strong burst to overhaul the ring wobbler Tarzan ($3.70-$4.80).

It was his third win in four attempts over the Caloundra 1000m course.
