Tony Pike backs The Bostonian to take next step in the spring

TONY Pike had to settle for a lesser prize than he originally came for, but in winning the Group 3 Sunshine Coast Guineas, set up a platform for The Bostonian to go to greater heights next season.

The Bostonian was scratched three times before finally making his Australian debut on June 10 at Caloundra. It meant he missed his target race, the $350,000 Queensland Guineas, but he has now won all three Australian starts, highlighted by Saturday’s $125,000 Group 3 feature.

Pike said there was never any talk of pulling the pin on the Australian campaign and he just had to be patient.

“We’ve been there and done that before,” he said. “There was always a lot of nice three-year-old races for this horse at the back end of the carnival, so it was a matter of waiting.

“It was unfortunate missing the (Queensland) Guineas, but in hindsight he had plenty of time to acclimatise and with three wins in a row, a couple of stakes races, it’s been a good end to the carnival.”

Pike has won seven Group 1 races in the past four seasons with Sacred Star, Sacred Elixir and Provocative and suggests The Bostonian is capable of joining that group of horses next season.

“I think he is (capable of being up to those horses),” he said.

“He’s a very straightforward horse to train. He’s very professional, he’s probably starting to mature, he was a bit weak last preparation, he’s looking a lot nicer horse now and probably next preparation he should improve further.

“It’s obviously another step up to Melbourne or Sydney, but we will just have to see the progression. He’s pretty professional. He only does what he’s asked to do. We will get him home, see how he spells and make our minds up from there.”

The Bostonian is a son of the New Zealand Derby and Rosehill Guineas winner Jimmy Choux from the Keeper mare Keepa Cheval, who is a half-sister to former champion Kiwi miler King Mufhasa.

The Bostonian was beaten 11 lengths at his only other 1600m attempt, but Pike said there was good reason for that.

“If you watch the replay he almost went through the running rail after a furlong and pretty much got put out of the race,” he said. “With the pedigree, we were pretty confident he would run out a strong mile.”

Punters had no concerns about the mile and backed The Bostonian into a clear favourite. Seaway, who had been top pick for much of the week, eased to $3 and only plugged in the straight to finish out of the placings.

Jockey Michael Cahill said he was forced to go for The Bostonian earlier than he wanted to, but the horse responded well under pressure.

“I wanted to hold him together until the 200m, but it happened before then and to his credit he responded to hard riding,” Cahill said. “He’s a good horse.”

Cahill said The Bostonian handled the wet conditions, but felt he was an even better horse the week before on top of the ground.
