Jay Ford’s winning touch brings out best in Liapari

LIAPARI was helped by a frenetic race tempo and form jockey Jay Ford’s winning habit to produce an upset result in the feature race at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday.

Ford rode 10 winners for the week but none of his efforts were better than his ride on Liapari in the Listed $150,000 Civic Stakes (1350m).

The die was cast early when noted frontrunner Jungle Edge zoomed to the front while Dreamforce speared over from a wide barrier to settle second and ensuring the speed was genuine.

This suited Liapari — a source of frustration at times for trainer Chris Waller because the gelding needs a solid tempo to produce his best — and it was up to Ford to find a path through from well back in the field.

Ford was up for the challenge. His confidence is sky high and with good reason as he won on Karavali at Randwick last Saturday, rode a double at Wyong on Tuesday, another two winners at Canterbury on Wednesday, then a treble at Moruya on Friday before his Rosehill brace on Tornado Gal and Liapari.

“Liapari appreciated the good tempo,’’ Ford said.

“When I gave him a rev up at the 600m, he immediately started to pick his way through the field, got the run on the inside and got himself into the race quite comfortably.

“We were able to cut through on the turn and then I exposed him halfway up the straight.

“I was giving the leader three or four lengths and I wasn’t sure I was going to be able to pick him up. But he really lengthened well late, he surged to the line the last 150m. He has always possessed that sort of ability but usually needs 1600m or 2000m.

“It is good signs for him going forward and hopefully this gives him confidence. It has been a while since he has won but on that effort it won’t be his last either.’’

Liapari, a $41 bolter, finished powerfully to run down the game, luckless Dreamforce ($7) by a half head with Flow ($5.50) one-and-a-half lengths away third.

Early leader Jungle Edge ($4.60 favourite) held on for fourth, albeit nearly three lengths from the winner.

“It was exciting to watch,’’ Waller said of the Civic Stakes finish. “They went really quick, it was a high pressure race. They were flying and it set it up for the backmarkers.

“Jungle Edge is a good horse and no one wanted to let him out of their sights. Dreamforce chased him all the way and he still ran second.

“Liapari was going pretty well at the 400m, he was certainly going the best of ours, and Jay has given him the good, solid ride he needed.’’

Waller said Liapari is now likely to be given his chance in the Listed $150,000 Winter Stakes (1400m) at Rosehill in two weeks.

Brenton Avdulla, rider of Dreamforce, felt if his mount had drawn a better barrier, the result would have been different.

Flow was given every possible chance by Corey Brown with the minor placegetters likely to take on Liapari again in the Winter Stakes while Jungle Edge is going for a let-up ahead of a new season sprint campaign.

GALA AFFAIR FOR KROGH AND CONLON
GALA Moshea won’t go down in the annals as a great but she provided trainer Brett Conlon and apprentice Quayde Krogh with a memorable first Sydney winner at Rosehill Gardens.

The Cranbourne-based Conlon said Gala Moshea was his first winner for the 2017-18 season while Krogh is going to apply for an extension to his apprenticeship after the mare’s win in the Book Spring Now Sprint (1100m).

Krogh, 26, came out of his time on Saturday but hopes Racing NSW stewards will agree to extend his apprenticeship at least through the winter.

“Give Quayde a rap, he’s has been working very hard the last four months at Gai’s,’’ jockey Adam Hyeronimus told the media after the race.

He was a late starter and only began riding four years ago.

“I was doing a carpentry apprenticeship in Rockhampton but that didn’t really work for me so I gave riding a go,’’ Krogh said.

Krogh, who has ridden more than 160 winners, can still claim 3kg in the city and rides as light as 49kg, was seen to advantage on Gala Moshea ($11) who scored by a half-length from the Hyeronimus mount Aimalac Millie ($10) with favourite Brook Magic ($2.30 favourite) just over a length away third.

Conlon said he decided to send Gala Moshea to Rosehill as the mare enjoys wet tracks and “works enormous the Sydney way’’.

“I’ve got a lot of confidence in this mare and I thought she was spot on for this race,’’ Conlon said. “I didn’t know who I was going to get to ride her but I wanted a 3kg apprentice. I watched some of Quayde’s rides and thought ‘he is a good rider’. He did the job today.’’

Conlon said Gala Moshea’s win broke an exasperating run of near-misses for his runners.

“I haven’t had many runners this season and this is my first winner,’’ he said.
