England players have undergone psychological testing

Recommended Posts

ENGLAND boss Gareth Southgate has called in psychologists to help him choose our penalty takers — and end our woeful shootout record.

Players sat psychometric tests to measure their mental strength before flying out to Russia for the World Cup. They have also been completing daily “wellness questionnaires” supervised by psychologist Pippa Grange, who was hired last year as head of team development.

Southgate, 47, is determined to halt our spot-kick hoodoo after his miss at Wembley against Germany dumped England out of Euro 96. He has used the test results to rank his stars and has drawn up a shortlist of takers incase Tuesday’s clash with Colombia goes to pens.

England’s record of one shootout win from seven at World Cups and Euros is the worst of any nation. Scientific analysis ordered by Southgate has revealed nervy English players tend to rush their penalties.

Routines at the team’s training base at Repino, near St Petersburg, have attempted to recreate match conditions. Exhausted stars are tested at the end of training and made to go on the dreaded “long walk” from the centre circle.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek recently revealed he would love to take one and skipper Harry Kane is a nailed-on certainty. An insider said: “Gareth is one of the many victims of England’s penalty curse and is determined to break the spell.

“He’s taken a very scientific approach to try to work out what we’re doing wrong and which of the players is best equipped to deal with the pressure. Some of the younger players are fearless and have no qualms about stepping up. But talking the talk is one thing … and taking that long walk is quite another.”

FA chief Martin Glenn backed the psychology drive after becoming alarmed by England’s mental fragility when losing to Iceland in Euro 2016. The players have been helped by Dr Grange, a Yorkshirewoman brought in last November to work on their resilience. She sat down with all of them individually before the tournament to discuss their “hopes and fears”, as well as lifestyles.

Associates say her “main bugbears” are booze and social media use. She has also worked with them on spot-kicks, giving each a penalty “framework”, which includes visualising scoring.
Slogans she has put around the team gym include: “Success isn’t given, it’s earned.”

A source at the camp said: “She is providing the motivational inspiration and helping the lads deal with the psychological pressures they are facing - the pressure on them is enormous.” Colombian media yesterday highlighted our shootout record and said England players had been practising since March.

Meanwhile, the brother of Colombian star Andres Escobar — murdered in 1994 after scoring a World Cup own goal — fears more deaths if his country loses to England.

He spoke as police probe death threats to Carlos Sanchez, who was sent off for Colombia against Japan in the group stage. Sachi Escobar, 54, said: “Nothing has been learned from my brother’s death. No player should be killed for making a mistake.”
