Severe drought fears loom as Brits continue to make the most of the sizzling sun

BRITAIN is in the grip of its longest heatwave since 1976, forecasters warned on Saturday.

Temperatures topped 30C (86F) every day last week, with a year- high of 33C (91F) on Thursday.

Similar is expected this week and throughout July — with fears of a first possible hosepipe ban since 2012.

Temperatures in 1976 hit at least 32.2C (90F) for 15 days running and led to a severe drought, with parts of the South West going 45 days without rain.

The latest heatwave could end up even drier.

It is not yet officially a drought but the Environment Agency will act if water supplies become critical.

Met Office forecaster Martin Bowles said: “We expect well-above-average temperatures for the most part throughout July. They won’t break individual records but will be consistently high.”

The Met Office reckons June will be in the top five driest since records began in 1910.

Official figures are set to be announced tomorrow.

Bookies Coral are offering 1-4 for this summer to be the hottest ever.

Northern Ireland issued its own hosepipe ban on Friday — and England and Wales could soon follow suit, sources claimed.

Some parts of Staffordshire and Shropshire have seen water supplies temporarily interrupted.

Britain could also run out of lettuce in days as it cannot grow above 30C (86F) and demand has soared by 40 per cent.
