Prince William says bringing peace to the Middle East is his life’s mission

PRINCE William says bringing "just and lasting peace" to the Middle East is his life's mission.

Last week he described his “profoundly moving” visit to the tomb of his great-grandmother Princess Alice in Jerusalem.

He became the first ever royal to visit Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories on official business.

A Palace source told the Sunday Mirror he is determined to bring peace to the troubled region.

The source claimed William, 36, told aides: "This is the start of something new. I will forever honour my commitments to the people I have met.”

An insider added: “The politicians who affect this younger generation’s lives may only be in office for five, 10 or 20 years – but William knows his duty is for life.”

Father-of-three William visited the Israeli-occupied West Bank on Wednesday, meeting Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and touring a refugee camp, on a day which also took him to the Israeli coastal city of Tel Aviv.

The Duke of Cambridge described his trip to the West Bank was a "very powerful one" during a speech at the British Consulate General in Jerusalem.

He assured Palestinians "you have not been forgotten".

Peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians collapsed in 2014 and the divide between the two sides has widened in the years since amid bouts of violence.

William was was cheered by locals as he made his first visit to a refugee camp to learn about the lives of Arabs on the West Bank.

He then travelled a few miles away through the streets of the West Bank camp of Jalazone to visit a school and health clinic.

Earlier Mahmoud Abbas broke with Royal protocol by holding William's arm in Ramallah as the Prince walked a diplomatic tightrope today.

The Palestinian leader was seen firmly shaking William's hand before using his arm to hold just below the Duke's elbow as he guided him to his office for their historic talks.

The Duke also visited Jalazone Refugee Camp and two schools in the area a part of his tour, which followed earlier visits to Jordan and Israel.

His historic visit comes months after dozens of Palestinians were killed by Israeli forces during protests this year at the border between Israel and the Gaza Strip ahead of 70th anniversary celebrations for the founding of Israel.
