GLASSHOUSE scratching Niccanova is set to kick off his new campaign on Friday, in what is shaping up as a crackerjack running of the $100,000 Rockhampton Newmarket (1300m).

Trainer Steve Tregea scratched Niccanova from Saturday’s Glasshouse because of the heavy surface and is set to head north seeking dryer ground.

Niccanova has raced just once since last year’s winter carnival, winning a Doomben Open Handicap in March, taking his overall record to five wins in seven starts.

“I had set him for the Glasshouse all along and was very keen to run him, but it just didn’t feel right on the day,” Tregea said.

“He can handle a heavy track, but first up on the heavy track, I wasn’t that fussed.”

Stablemate Bergerac is a likely travelling companion, with Tregea aiming him at Saturday’s $100,000 Rockhampton Cup (1600m).

The Newmarket field will be headed by Desleigh Forster’s Too Good To Refuse, who was nominated for the race last year but did not run.

Forster expects Too Good To Refuse to receive 59kg when handicaps are released on Tuesday, which means Niccanova is likely to be weighted around the 58.5kg mark.

Rockhampton Jockey Club chief executive Tony Fenlon said indications are that the south-east of the state will have a strong presence over the two days.

The leading trainer of the carnival will drive away in a new Mitsubishi Triton 4WD valued at $30,000 and state’s two leading stables are chasing the prize.

Tony Gollan has up to 10 horses heading to Rockhampton, while Currie has told officials he could have as many as 14 runners over the two days, including Cantbuybetter (Cup) and Sword Of Justice (Newmarket).

Gollan’s big race hopes are El Campeador (Cup), Of The Day and Charlie Boy (Newmarket).

Kelly Schweida, off a double at Caloundra, has Stella Ombra (Newmarket) and Outraged (Cup) pencilled in for Callaghan Park starts.

Daryl Hansen, Tony Sears and Lindsay Hatch are others heading north.

It’s also possible Chris Waller could be represented for the first time at the Rockhampton carnival, while Toby Edmonds may have Siegfried run in the Newmarket.

The carnival festivities kick off with the Cup Calcutta on Friday at the Red Lion Hotel, a function that is almost sold out.

Former Australian cricket coach Darren Lehmann will be a special guest of the club and popular Victorian racecaller Rick McIntosh will return after making his Rocky debut last year.

APPEALS PROCESS AGAIN SNOOKERS COMMISSION
THE miserable strike rate of the QRIC at the Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal continued last week when top harness driver Grant Dixon had two charges against him dropped.

Dixon had been handed suspensions of six and eight weeks relating to two different drives which stewards deemed unacceptable, but QCAT member Ian Hanger set aside both, which were both heard at the same appeal.

Although the specific rule differs between harness and thoroughbred racing, the Dixon charges had a similar theme to last week’s two-month ban handed to Damian Browne.

Comments made by Hanger underline how difficult it is for stewards to maintain a charge of this kind when appeals are taken to QCAT.

“Mere errors of judgment in the running of the race should not be penalised unless the conduct can be described as blameworthy,” Hanger wrote.

“Having listened to Mr Dixon, and Mr (David) Farquharson (harness racing chief steward) and considering the transcript of the steward’s inquiry and decision, I am not comfortably satisfied that the conduct of Mr Dixon can be considered worthy of blame.

“I have listened to the evidence, viewed the video from each angle and searched for conduct that might be described as blameworthy on the part of Mr Dixon.

“I take into account that he is the person who knows the horse; the fact that he formed the opinion that the extra lap plus the horse’s personality had placed it at a slight disadvantage, the fact that at the end of the race its pulse was much higher than it would normally be at the end of a race and the fact that it is Mr Dixon who must make the split second decisions that are required in the course of a race.

“I am not comfortably satisfied that Mr Dixon drove in an unacceptable manner.”

In summing up the case, Hanger also made the suggestion that QRIC would be better served seeking independent specialist witnesses.

“It would be more appropriate to call as a witness an independent expert who is not associated with the decision making process,” he wrote.

Browne will appeal his two-month suspension, with the matter no doubt destined to end up in the hearing rooms of QCAT.
