Coolmore, Godolphin set off on journey to reach Everest summit

COOLMORE and Godolphin, the two most powerful stables in world racing, are set to target the $13 million The Everest in Sydney during the spring carnival.

Aidan O’Brien, the Irish training genius who prepares the Coolmore team in the northern hemisphere, has never had a Sydney starter before but he could have multiple runners here this spring including Everest hopeful US Navy Flag.

Coolmore’s Tom Magnier told Sky Sports Radio he had been in discussions with O’Brien and his son, Joseph O’Brien, in recent days and there are plans to “make a big charge” at the spring carnival even though the decision had been made to retire Merchant Navy to stud after his Diamond Jubilee Stakes win at Royal Ascot last week.

Similarly, Godolphin’s English trainer Charlie Appleby prepares Blue Point, who emerged as an Everest contender with an impressive win in the King’s Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot last week.

Appleby has been a regular and successful raider to Australian racing carnivals in recent years including his Sydney Cup win with Polarisation last year so he is well aware of the Canterbury quarantine and training facility for international raiders.

Godolphin sprinter Harry Angel, trained by Charlie Cox, is still regarded as England’s best sprinter despite the barrier mishap that ruined his Diamond Jubilee Stakes bid last week.

Australian Turf Club’s international equine recruiter James Ross said the result of next week’s July Cup at Newmarket was pivotal to the chances of Coolmore and Godolphin sending sprinters down under for The Everest, and other stable runners for support races.

American trainer Wesley Ward is also considering setting Bound For Nowhere for The Everest after his close third to Merchant Navy at Royal Ascot.

There are still six slots left in The Everest and it is understood at least three slot-holders are looking closely at the international sprinters.

The Australian Turf Club has one Everest slot and is keen for an overseas sprinter to boost the race’s international profile.

LATROBE REUNITES O’BRIEN-WILLLIAMS COMBINATION
LATROBE reunited the Melbourne Cup-winning combination of trainer Joseph O’Brien and owner Lloyd Williams to win the Irish Derby at The Curragh overnight.

The winner was ridden by the trainer’s brother, Donnacha and fought hard to beat Rostropovich and Saxon Warrior, both prepared by their father, Aidan O’Brien.

Latrobe is by Camelot, who Joseph O’Brien rode to win the Derby six years ago.

Joseph O’Brien became the youngest trainer to win the Melbourne Cup last year when Rekindling took out the famous race.

“We had intended on taking our time a bit, but Donnacha let him go forward as there wasn’t much pace on and that was the winning and losing of the race,” Joseph O’Brien said.

“He had a perfect position all the way, and committed him at the perfect time. The horse is tough and stays well.

“I have to thank everyone in the yard, especially Joey Fallon, who rides him out, and Lloyd and Nick (Williams) have been so good to me. I’m so grateful and lucky.”
