Cameron Bancroft likes what he sees in the NT as he makes cricket comeback

DARWIN is proving to be the perfect destination for Cameron Bancroft’s road to redemption.

The banned Australian opener on Sunday played his first competitive cricket match in the NT Strike League since being caught up in the infamous ball-tampering scandal in South Africa in March.

Vice-captain David Warner – who will also feature in the Strike League later this month – and captain Steve Smith both received one-year bans from Cricket Australia as a result, while Bancroft received nine months.

Despite failing to fire with the bat for the Desert Storm in two matches – making scores of just 1 and 8 – Bancroft said he was enjoying life in the Top End.

“It felt really good, it’s quite relaxing up here,” he said.

“It wasn’t an ideal start for me personally but the team won, sometimes it’s not all about me. I’ve come up to have fun and play some cricket.”

The 25-year-old said one of his main goals while taking part in the month-long competition was helping to mentor young Territory cricketers.

“Part of me being up here is giving back and imparting the experience to the other guys in the change room and on the field,” he said.

“It will be a good opportunity with training up here to be a mentor and connect with some of the NT guys.

“Coming out there today it just felt like I was having fun with some guys that will hopefully be my mates in the next couple of weeks.”

Bancroft said he was impressed by the weather, lifestyle and facilities the Territory had to offer.

“I think the facilities here are fantastic … the No. 1 ground looked lovely,” he said.

“I’m looking forward to being part of this community up here and enjoying my time in Darwin.”
