Fawad Ahmed showing why Victoria might have been hasty in cutting ties

VICTORIA may be forced into an embarrassing backflip on their decision to axe Fawad Ahmed from their state contract list if fellow spinner Jon Holland is selected on Australia’s tour of the UAE.

Ahmed is using the unlikely surrounds of Ontario, Canada to showcase why he is still one of the top spinners in Australian cricket.

The 36-year-old on Sunday spun out world class hitters Lendl Simmons, Ben McDermott and David Miller to follow on from his high-profile scalp of Steve Smith in the first game, as Ahmed led Vancouver to a comprehensive win over David Warner’s Winnipeg Hawks.

There has been a perception around Australian cricket that Ahmed struggles against the better players or when he goes to a higher level, but certainly in the Twenty20 format he has built a resume as strong as most spinners going around.

Victoria’s decision to cut Ahmed, as first revealed by News Corp, is highly controversial given he has consistently been one of their leading wicket-takers during their era of Sheffield Shield dominance.

Holland has to be a leading contender to be picked alongside Nathan Lyon for the UAE tour against Pakistan in October, given he was the spare spinner taken to South Africa this year.

If that happens, Holland would miss at least the first three rounds of the Shield season and Victoria would be without an experienced spinner.

Ahmed doesn’t hide his disappointment at his treatment by Victoria but says he has no hard feelings and would happily accept a second chance if it came his way.

“It was tough, definitely. It was disappointing,” Ahmed said.

“But at the end of the day, you can’t sit and be disappointed and just whinge about things.

“I’m going to move on.

“I’m going to work hard, I’m going to play well here (in Canada) as well as the Caribbean Premier League and by the time I go home it’ll be the start of the (one-day) cup.

“If something comes up all well and good, I’m happy to play and represent my state again and again.

“But I’m not going to expect anything from them. You can’t sit on your hands and wait for the moment.

“They have some youngsters who are pretty good as well and if they’re playing, I’m happy for them.”
