Former keeper Tando Velaphi joins in on new wave at Glory

Perth Glory have signed goalkeeper Tando Velaphi for next season in his second spell at the A-League club.

The 31-year-old made 74 appearances for Glory between 2007 and 2011 after making his A-League debut for Queensland Roar.

The former Australia under-20 and under-23 representative has also played for Melbourne Victory, Melbourne City and Wellington Phoenix and spent two years in Japan with Shonan Bellmare.

“The project here at Glory is something that I’m really excited for and I didn’t have to think twice about coming back,” Velaphi said.

“With the team we’re putting together and the boss (coach Tony Popovic) coming on board, we have high expectations and we want to deliver on the field.

“Personally I’m going to push as hard as I can for the number one position.

“There’s going to be a lot of competition for spots and that can only benefit the team as it will mean everyone’s being pushed to their limits. That’s what it’s about at this level.

“Hopefully everyone from front to back can work together in unison and push towards something really special for the club.”

Glory football director Jacob Burns said he was pleased to be able to welcome back a WA player who started his career with Perth SC.

“Tando is a wonderful character and a fantastic pro who obviously knows the club well,” Burns said.

“He’s a great addition to the squad and will provide great competition for the number one spot between the sticks this season.”

Glory will meanwhile play their FFA Cup round of 32 clash against reigning A-League premiers Melbourne Victory on Tuesday August 7 at nib Stadium, kick-off 6.30pm.

It is the first time Glory have been drawn at home in this stage of the competition and chief executive Tony Pignata said it would be an intriguing tie.

“It’s a very exciting tie for us against Melbourne and the whole club is really looking forward to the challenge,” he said.

“The FFA Cup is a competition that Glory have traditionally performed well in and we’re determined to do so again this year.”

In other games Gwelup Croatia will play Adelaide Comets at Dorien Gardens on Wednesday July 25 and Armadale travel to Cairns on Wednesday August 1.
