Footy fans with Down syndrome will play a game at Adelaide Oval at half-time

THESE passionate footy fans are gearing up to play the game they love in front of a crowd of thousands at the state’s biggest stadium.

They will join 11 other adults and children with Down syndrome for a game at Adelaide Oval at halftime in the AFL Power-St Kilda match Saturday.

The initiative is part of the Fiona McBurney Experience, a collaboration between the SANFL, AFL Umpires Association and Down Syndrome SA.

For Down Syndrome SA member ambassador James White, 27, it is a chance to revisit the game he loved to play in Waikerie many years ago.

He said he was happy thousands of people – including some of his nearest and dearest – would get to watch him play on the hallowed grounds with his fellow teammates.

“My dad is coming to watch, my brother and his girlfriend … and my grandad,” he said.

Melissa Kirkman, 18, said she was “so excited” because “football is amazing”.

Down Syndrome SA chief Maureen Lawlor said the new event was a “fabulous opportunity” for their participants.

“Hardly anybody gets a chance to go out and play on Adelaide Oval,” she said.

“They are all massive football fans … so we’re just super excited to get out there.”

SANFL state umpiring manager Shane Harris said the organisation treasured their relationship with Down Syndrome SA.

“A lot of them who get the opportunity to play today probably don’t get … to play a lot of footy,” he said.
