Roger Federer cruises into fourth round, will face France’s Adrian Mannarino

DEFENDING champion Roger Federer continued his serene progress at a Wimbledon full of shocks with a straightforward victory over Jan-Lennard Struff.

The Swiss ace needed just over an hour and a half to book a fourth-round spot by beating the big-serving German 6-3 7-5 6-2.

The 36-year-old Swiss extended his winning streak to 29 consecutive sets at the All England Club.

“I think I can be very happy today,” said Federer, who will next face France’s Adrian Mannarino.

“It’s a wonderful feeling walking out there, I try to put on a good match and try hard every time, regardless of how many times I’ve played at Wimbledon. It’s the most special court for me, hundreds of thousands must have come to see me play here.” Federer, the only semi-finalist from last year left in either of the singles draws, will face France’s Adrian Mannarino on Monday.

Ninth-seeded American John Isner reached fourth round for the first time by beating world No. 98 Radu Albot of Moldova 6-3 6-3 6-4 earlier on Friday. This is his 10th appearance at Wimbledon; he has reached the third round three times previously and lost.

Isner will face world No. 31 Stefanos Tsitsipas, the first Greek man to first Greek man to reach the fourth round of a grand slam in the 50-year professional era, for a quarterfinal berth.

South African eighth seed Kevin Anderson and Frenchman Gael Monfils also reached the final 16 on Friday.

Anderson has now made to this stage at The All England Club four times in his career.

However, the dominant way he played in his 6-3 7-5 7-5 victory over German Philipp Kohlschreiber suggested he could go further than ever before. Anderson, the only African left in the singles draws, will face Frenchman Gael Monfils for a place in the last eight.

Monfils is another fourth round debutant after he knocked out last year’s semi- finalist Sam Querrey 5-7 6-4 6-4 6-2.

Earlier on Friday, fourth seed Alexander Zverev reached the third round for the third year in a row when he came from 2-1 down to complete a 6-4 5-7 6-7(0) 6-1 6-2 victory over Taylor Fritz in their suspended match.
