Bring on Rafael Nadal, says Aussie young gun Alex de Minaur after win

Alex de Minaur says he won't be fazed facing world No.1 Rafael Nadal in a third-round show-court clash at Wimbledon.

The 19-year-old Sydneysider- now the youngest player remaining in the men's draw following Denis Shapovalov's exit - beat Frenchman Pierre-Hugues Herbert 6-2 6-7 (10-8) 7-6 6-3, to set up an encounter with the 17-time grand slam winner.

De Minaur spent his formative tennis years in Spain and although he has huge respect for the king of clay, he'll treat him no different to any other opponent.

"It's an experience I am really looking forward to, playing a legend like he is," de Minaur said.

"But once I get on court it is going to be just another match. I am going to go out there, compete have fun and leave it all out there."

Nick Kyrgios, who is also through to the third round, believes his young countryman has the game to shock Nadal, just like he did in 2014 when he announced himself to the world with victory over the Spaniard on Centre Court.

De Minaur believes he played some of the best tennis of his career against world No.72 Herbert, and is confident he can transfer it to the biggest match of his life.

Having won a recent event in Nottingham and reached the final of another Challenger event in Surbiton, de Minaur has plenty of form on grass.

Nadal breezed past through his opening two rounds without dropping a set, but hasn't won at Wimbledon since 2010 and not ventured past the fourth round since 2012.

"Let's just say I'd rather play him than Paris," de Minaur said.

"Obviously anywhere I play him is going to be a tough match, but I am playing some good tennis and we'll see what happens on the day."

De Minaur said he'd only had brief encounters with Nadal during his time in Spain and looked forward to shaking hands with him as an opponent on the biggest stage in tennis.

"I have watched him on lot of TV, just like I did with guys like Roger (Federer) and before that 'Rusty' (Lleyton Hewitt)," he said.

"It's amazing that I am out here playing against these guys."

Nadal said he was looking forward to facing de Minaur and, although he'll treat him with respect, is confident there'll be no repeat of his shock loss to Kyrgios four years ago.

"I know him," Nadal said after his 6-4 6-3 6-4 second-round win over Mikhail Kukushkin, who beat de Minaur at Eastbourne last week.

"He's good. He's young. He's dangerous. Good player. So let's see. Is a good challenge for me.

"But have been a very positive match this afternoon. I am very happy the way that I played today.

"That's going to be a good energy to play the next round."
