Lucky Arctic fox released after dramatic iceberg rescue

Recommended Posts

A STARVING Arctic fox stranded on a drifting iceberg was rescued after a nearby crew rammed the floating block.

Cliff Russell, his son Alan and partner Mallory Harrigan had been crab fishing when they spotted a baby seal four miles off the coast of Labrador, Canada.

When they ventured closer, they realised it was actually a helpless fox in desperate need of food.

Ms Harrigan said the fox had likely found trouble while on the hunt.

“It had probably got stuck out there looking for a meal,” she told Bored Panda.

“Cliff says he thinks he got out there to check out a bit of meat on the ice and it broke apart, sending him out to sea.”

To rescue the depleted animal, the crew had to ram the ice to break it up before coaxing it on board.

“We had to break the ice he was on and get him with the dipnet,” Ms Harrigan said.

“He fought and fought to get away until he literally couldn’t move anymore.”

Safely on the vessel, the fox was made a makeshift bed and, after six hours, finally accepted a tin of vienna sausages.

After being warmed and fed, the replenished fox was released onto an island in the harbour.

Video of the release shows the fox happy to leave the ordeal in the past.
