Tupac Shakur murder: US cops deny arrests imminent

After reinvestigating the murder of US rapper Tupac Shakur, Las Vegas police say they’re no nearer to making arrests.

The musician was fatally shot in his car on a street in the Nevada resort city in 1996 by an unknown gunman.

A filmed confession by former gang member Keffe D in a TV documentary – Death Row Chronicles - earlier this year prompted a new police probe, reports the New York Daily News.

Keffe D – whose real name is Duane Keith Davis – said he was in the front seat of a car in Las Vegas in 1996 when someone in the rear drew a gun and fired on a black BMW with Shakur in it.

When questioned about the identity of the shooter, Keffe D said: “Going to keep it for the code of the streets. It just came from the backseat, bro.”

The two men in the backseat were later identified as Keffe D’s nephew Orlando Anderson and DeAndre Smith.

Anderson denied firing the weapon and died in a gang shootout in 1998.

The interview broadcast on the BET network triggered calls for police to reinvestigate the case.

But local media outlets are reporting police will not be making any arrests.

In a statement, the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department said: “We are aware of the statements made in a BET interview regarding the Tupac case”.

“As a result of those statements we have spent the last several months reviewing the case in its entirety.

“Various reports that an arrest warrant is about to be submitted are inaccurate. This case still remains an open homicide case.”

The claims by Keffe D were previously reported in the book Murder Rap, written in 2011 by former Los Angeles detective Greg Kading.

Keffe D said he had offered his new TV confession because he is dying.

“People have been pursuing me for 20 years, I’m coming out now because I have cancer, and I have nothing else to lose,” he said in the interview.

“All I care about now is the truth.”
