Ant-Man & The Wasp director Peyton Reed opens up about that mid-credits scene shocker. Returning for the sequel after helming the first Ant-Man movie in 2015, Reed is also introducing the MCU's first co-headlining female superhero in Evangeline Lilly's The Wasp. Alongside Paul Rudd's Ant-Man and Michael Douglas' Hank Pym, the three plot a rescue mission to retrieve Michelle Pfeiffer's Janet van Dyne from the Quantum Realm, while also coming up against a brand new threat named Ghost, played by Hannah John-Kamen.

Set two years after the events of Captain America: Civil War and concurrently happening with Avengers: Infinity War, it makes sense that Ant-Man & The Wasp has some strong narrative links to the latest Marvel ensemble film. However, the connection was most apparent during the film's mid-credits scene where the old and new versions of the superhero duo team-up to further explore the Quantum Realm. While Scott traveled to the microverse, Thanos' galactic genocide ensued - dusting off all three Pyms.

In an interview with Den of Geek, Reed talked about how they came up with the idea of tying the end of Ant-Man & The Wasp to Infinity War. As it turns out, they always knew that they wanted to address the aftermath of Thanos' deadly snap, but they initially didn't know how. It was actually Avengers 3 writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely who came up with the idea.

“What we didn't necessarily know was how we were going to deal with it. Do we glimpse TV monitors and TV reports of stuff going on in other parts of the world? That stuff seemed kind of lame and obvious. We've seen that in other movies. It didn't feel particularly inspired.

I think that Markus and McFeely did the first crack at that scene, just conceptually. They set up these elements, and we refined it with our writers’ room…It felt like our movie's very particular way of dealing with that scene.”

Of course, other than just having the same ending as Infinity War, Ant-Man & The Wasp's mid-credits scene is also more likely a set-up for Avengers 4. After the Pyms were snuffed out of existence, a clueless Scott was left in the Quantum Realm without anyone else operating the Quantum Tunnel. How he comes out of the alternated dimension he's currently in remains to be seen, but considering that he's tipped to play a significant part in Avengers 4, he's expected to emerge from it one way or another.

It's still unknown just how much time has passed since the Mad Titan's click when next year's still-untitled offering picks up, but one thing's for sure: There won't be any new stories set in between the movies with Captain Marvel being a period piece set in the '90s. This way, there would be no more clues as to what might go down in Avengers 4. As for Ant-Man & The Wasp, the full introduction of the Quantum Realm and the Quantum Tunnel are expected to play a huge a part in the Avengers' attempt to restore order in the galaxy and defeat Thanos.
