The series is co-produced with Ivanhoe and India's Phantom Films and will premier in August.

Netflix is set to chill Indian audiences with its first Indian original horror series, Ghoul. Produced in partnership with Blumhouse, Ivanhoe and Indian production company Phantom Films, the three-episode series will stream worldwide Aug. 24.

Ghoul is based on Arabic folklore and is set in a covert detention center where Nida, a newly minted interrogator who turned in her own father as an anti-government activist, arrives to discover that some of the terrorists held there are not of this world. Written and directed by Patrick Graham, the series will star Radhika Apte (who also starred in Sacred Games) and Manav Kaul.

Blumhouse CEO Jason Blum (Paranormal Activity, Insidious) said Ghoul marked the company's first foray into the horror genre in India "and we’re excited to share this project with horror enthusiasts around the world."

Back in 2014, Blumhouse, Ivanhoe and Phantom Films announced a multi-year partnership to produce local-language genre movies in India.

Netflix is eyeing India for aggressive expansion and its slate includes upcoming cricket series Selection Day and spy caper Bard of Blood, which will be co-produced by superstar Shah Rukh Khan's banner Red Chillies Entertainment.

The streaming giant just premiered its debut local series Sacred Games on July 6, directed by Anurag Kashyap and Vikramaditya Motwane, which was also produced by Phantom.
