Saudi Arabia counters ‘baseless’ claims by Wimbledon over piracy

The Ministry of Media for the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has hit back at claims from the world’s tennis governing bodies over pirate broadcaster BeoutQ.

In a statement the Ministry of Media argued that claims Saudi Arabia is complicit in BeoutQ’s broadcasts were “baseless”.

The world tennis governing body and Wimbledon had claimed that “over the past 12 months, beoutQ has been brazenly stealing the broadcast feeds of international tennis tournaments and distributing them illegally on a satellite provider called Arabsat.”

Wimbledon claimed that BeoutQ is an “illegal Saudi Arabian-based piracy operation”, but the Ministry of Media said there were “no sources of evidence for that allegation”.

Alongside Wimbledon, Al Jazeera, which is Wimbledon's exclusive licensee in the Middle East and North Africa, made claims against BeoutQ.

The ministry said it “rejects these allegations in the strongest possible terms.”

It said: “The Ministry is aware of no such evidence. The Ministry understands that BeoutQ’s set-top boxes are available in many places, including Qatar and perhaps Eastern Europe. BeoutQ touts itself as based in either Cuba or Colombia.”

The ministry highlighted that it “remains devoted to protecting intellectual property rights within the country” and that it has seized “thousands” of set-top boxes.

The governing body of world football, FIFA, announced at the start of the 2018 World Cup that It would be taking action against BeoutQ.
