Trump mocks Brexit crisis saying meeting Putin ‘might be easier’ than his UK visit

DONALD Trump today declared Britain was in "turmoil" as he said meeting with Vladimir Putin next week may be easier than his visit to Theresa May.

Trump was today flying out to Brussels ahead of a crunch summit with Nato allies, his first state visit to Britain and a meeting with Putin in Helsinki.

He told reporters: "I have NATO, I have the UK, which is in somewhat turmoil, and I have Putin.

"Frankly, Putin may be the easiest of them all. Who would think?"

Answering a reporter's question over whether May would stay in power amid the Brexit crisis, Trump said: "That's up to the people. I get along with her very well, I have a very good relationship."

May is grappling with a political crisis after Brexit Secretary David Davis and foreign minister, Boris Johnson, resigned over her Brexit proposals.

But directly addressing President Trump's remarks this evening at a press conference, she said she was "looking forward" to speaking with him.

She added: "We will be talking positively about how we can continue to work together in our special relationship for the good of people living in the UK and the United States and, actually, for the wider good."

Trump, who said he has not spoken with May since the resignations, also described Johnson as a "friend of mine" and said he might speak with him during the trip.

"He's been very, very nice to me, very supportive. Maybe we'll speak to him when I get over there. I like Boris Johnson. I've always liked him."

Trump's week-long trip to Europe includes a meeting in Brussels with NATO partners, who he has accused of not paying their way, and a summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin in the Finnish capital.

In between, he will be in Britain, with a black tie dinner hosted by May on Thursday and a working visit with the prime minister on Friday.

Downing Street responded to Trump's "turmoil" comment in a statement.

A spokesperson said: "The Prime Minister looks forward to showing Donald Trump the UK and is confident that he will leave with a very positive view."
