Amazon's Good Omens TV Show Casts Frances McDormand As The Voice Of God

Actress Frances McDormand will be providing the voice of God in Amazon's upcoming television series Good Omens. The two-time winner of the Oscar for Best Actress has become the latest acclaimed actor to join the cast of the highly anticipated television show. The series' impressive cast already boasts the likes of Jon Hamm, Nick Offerman, Miranda Richardson, Michael Sheen and David Tennant.

Based on a popular book co-written by The Sandman author Neil Gaiman and Discworld creator Terry Pratchett, Good Omens has been described as what it might be like if Monty Python remade the classic horror movie The Omen. The plot focuses upon an angel (Sheen) and a devil (Tennant) who have become more fond of humanity than their bosses would prefer. The two form an unlikely alliance to stop Armageddon when the Anti-Christ goes missing as a result of a mix-up at the hospital. Hilarity ensues as the Four Horseman of the Apocalypse gather, various portents portend and all Hell (and Heaven) breaks loose.

Amazon revealed Dormand's casting during their panel at San Diego Comic Con 2018. The casting of a woman as God is expected to cause an uproar among certain religious groups. Given the story of Good Omens, however, the depiction of God by a woman may be the least of their complaints, with the series also depicting a black Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden.

Good Omens has been in production since 2017 and is expected to premiere on Amazon sometime in 2019. Gaiman is personally supervising the production - the result of a final request from Terry Pratchett just before his death from Alzheimer's disease in 2015. It is perhaps the most highly anticipated project that Amazon has taken on, with both Gaiman and Pratchett having sizable fan followings in the United States and Terry Pratchett widely considered to be one of the finest satirists of the 20th century.

Given its length and complex story with multiple subplots, it will be interesting to see how Good Omens is condensed into a six-episode, single-season series. With Gaiman personally supervising the production, however, it is almost certain to be a success. Gaiman has been on something of a roll in Hollywood of late, with the series based on his novel American Gods proving a critical success and his short story How To Talk To Girls At Parties being adapted into a movie with Elle Fanning and Nicole Kidman.
