David Willey returns for Perth Scorchers title tilt

Recommended Posts

ENGLAND paceman David Willey will be Perth Scorchers’ first overseas signing for this summer.

Willey, who will return for a fourth straight season, is set to be available for most or all of the expanded Big Bash League tournament in a boost for the Scorchers.

Part of England’s Twenty20 and one-day outfits, Willey’s only international white-ball commitments will come in the West Indies in either February or March next year, with match dates yet to be locked in.

Willey, 28, has been a valuable new ball bowler for the Scorchers and he is also a dangerous hitter who can float anywhere in the order.

The Scorchers used only one of their two international spots last summer, replacing Willey with countryman Tim Bresnan when he joined the England set-up.

However Perth is likely to use their second international spot this summer and could look overseas for a spinner to back up Ashton Agar.

The Scorchers were left to rue not having another spin option in last summer’s semifinal loss to Hobart Hurricanes. The Hurricanes blasted an all-pace attack around Optus Stadium as they racked up 4-210, with Agar unavailable after being called up for national duties.

Cameron Bancroft is likely to make his return from a nine-month suspension for ball tampering against Hobart in Launceston on December 30, the day after his ban expires.

Bancroft will only miss Perth’s first three BBL fixtures and can play the last 11 games as well as finals, if he does not win an immediate recall into the Test team. Bancroft’s comeback match will begin after the fifth day of the Boxing Day Test against India is scheduled to end.

Bancroft, banned along with Steve Smith and David Warner for his infamous role in the ball tampering scandal in South Africa in March, has previously played a key role for Perth as a wicketkeeper-batsman.

The Scorchers could receive a mixture of good and bad news from this summer’s new-look international schedule. National white-ball representatives Agar, Andrew Tye and Jhye Richardson will only be gone for about 10 days in the middle of January if they are selected for three one-dayers against India, missing only two or three Scorchers games.

But Shaun and Mitch Marsh will miss virtually the entire BBL tournament if they are part of both the Test and one-day teams. The two-Test series against Sri Lanka is not due to finish until February 5, meaning the brothers could potentially appear for the Scorchers in their final regular season fixture against Adelaide Strikers in Alice Springs on February 9 and then play in the BBL finals if they were released by national selectors following a long international summer.

Veteran paceman Mitchell Johnson, who turns 37 in November, is yet to make a decision over whether he will play a third consecutive summer with the Scorchers.
