Veteran Jamie Whincup says he’s got a few years of racing left in him yet

SUPERCARS ace Jamie Whincup says he has no plans to follow Craig Lowndes out the retirement door and hit back at suggestions he is out of the race for an eighth championship this season.

Whincup finished fourth in Saturday’s first race at the Ipswich Super Sprint as Shell V-Power’s Scott McLaughlin increased his championship lead with his seventh win of the year.

Whincup, 35, claimed a record seventh championship last season following an epic final round duel with rising star McLaughlin.

McLaughlin has hit back this year to lead the championship at the halfway mark, with Red Bull Holden gun Whincup moving into third behind teammate Shane van Gisbergen.

Whincup has won seven of the past 10 championships to become the undoubted king of the category.

And he has no plans to hang up his helmet after legendary teammate Lowndes recently indicated this will be his final season in the hot-seat.

“I won’t go past my use-by date,” Whincup told The Sunday Mail.

“I’ve still got a few years left in me yet. When I call it quits, I’m not sure. But I won’t go too long.

“I still feel that at 35 I’ve got plenty of years left in me.

“I’m a pretty simple person. I love the concept of going out there and racing my mates. I still get the same excitement today as what I did on day one.

“I’m enjoying it. There is always challenges and this year is no different being 400 points down mid-year.

“It’s a big challenge on our hands to try and claw that back.”

After winning a sixth title in 2014, Whincup finished fifth the following year, prompting fears he could be on the way out.

But he responded with a runner-up finish to Van Gisbergen in 2016 before claiming a seventh championship last year with a gutsy performance in wake of the fast-improving McLaughlin.

The 25-year-old McLaughlin has been the championship’s most consistent driver this year, but Whincup’s experience tells him the race is not over.

“Everyone is saying ‘gee, you’re a fair bit back in the championship, what’s going on?’ Whincup said.

“We didn’t have that good of a run in the first quarter of the year. The good news is there is still plenty of time to go.

“(McLaughlin) is going well, there’s no doubt he will be hard to catch. But we are only halfway through the year and there are some big races coming up with 300 points on the nose.

“It’s too early to get carried away with the championship. It’s about getting some pace and as many race wins as you can.”

Whincup got his campaign back on track with a podium finish in Darwin before claiming a first and second in Townsville last month.

He produced an impressive drive yesterday after qualifying sixth fastest and said he was looking to turn around his recent form at the Queensland Raceway.

“I was feeling good after Darwin where we made a big step forward and then we improved the car again in Townsville,” Whincup said.

“We’re not getting too far ahead of ourselves. That’s only one round.

“It’s always been a mega challenge (at Ipswich). It’s been a bit of a bogey track for us for a while. We need to make sure we do a good job.”

The second race of the Ipswich Super Sprint starts at 2.05pm on Sunday.
