DIDN’T the announcement of a $24m injection of prizemoney into NSW racing make the other states react?

Top Gold Coast trainer Bryan Guy said Racing Queensland needed to take note of Racing NSW’s great management and state government support. He said if the Queensland government didn’t stop using racing as a “political football” and show the industry more support it would “drift off into the sunset”.

Steward cuts to the chase
CHIEF steward Marc Van Gestel asked Kerrin McEvoy why he didn’t improve his position on hot favourite Ombudsman at the 800m of his race, which was won by Grey Lion, at Royal Randwick. “I was happy with how we were travelling,” McEvoy said. “We thought we had the best turn of foot in the race with only 53kg. I wasn’t worried at the half mile but at the 600m he didn’t pick up. Maybe he just wants more tempo and a bit of cut in the ground.”

BLAKE Shinn was left scratching his head when Seahampton flopped as a well-backed favourite at Royal Randwick. Coming off a sensational win last start, she was a $2.30 favourite but finished 11th of 12. “She seemed a bit flat,” Shinn told stewards. “I was worried that I was going to be too far back to pick them up, but maybe that big run last start affected her. I gave her a couple of reminders but there was no response.” Stewards said Seahampton had to trial before it raced again.

Duck battle
WHAT about the duck that flew into Andrew Adkins as he was riding in a race at Gosford during the week? “It hit me in the head and fell into my lap,” Adkins said. The young jockey already knew how to deal with the distraction. “It’s already happened to me before, at Grafton. I think it was a magpie that day.”

IT was weird when the second race jumped at Randwick on Saturday to hear no call of the race on the track due to a technical glitch. Punters stood in silence and watched until the field got the 200m mark and the cheers started to be heard.

COLLEAGUE Tony Thomas had a good day out at Randwick, tipping six winners, including Our Malambo at $18.

HORSES TO FOLLOW: Witherspoon (very honest filly), Bella Success (very unlucky), Oria (eye-catching run)

ONES TO SACK: Sepoy Acheva (not up to Saturday grade), Redouble (promises a lot but doesn’t win)

RIDE OF THE DAY: JASON COLLETT on Gaulois (didn’t go around a horse to win)

QUOTE OF THE DAY: “Punters are paying the prizemoney in racing and we want to inform them (on how a horse will run),” said chief steward Marc Van Gestel to trainer Wayne Seelin when questioning the tactics of Isorich who was up on the speed.
