Steph Wood will play 50th national league game when Lightning play Adelaide

GIVEN she once feared never reaching netball’s top level, Sunshine Coast Lightning goal attack Steph Wood has crammed a lot into her first 49 national league games.

Multiple grand final appearances and one premiership has been a stellar return for the Townsville-born Wood, who has also become an integral member of the Australian Diamonds set-up.

The 26-year-old made her national league debut in 2015 with the NSW Swifts before heading home to Queensland last year when she helped the Lightning capture the Suncorp Super Netball title.

Wood will reach her 50-game milestone in Adelaide on Sunday when the Lightning take on the Thunderbirds in a clash where the fifth-placed Sunshine Coast must cash-in with maximum bonus points to stay in the finals race.

Wood – who first dreamt of playing netball professionally when she was just 10-years-old – said the milestone had special meaning.

“While in some respects it’s just a number, reaching 50 games is also pretty exciting considering there were times when I didn’t think I’d ever land a contract playing at an elite level,” Wood said.

“It took years before I was offered a contract with NSW Swifts and I’m so grateful to have received that break when I did.

“It was a tough decision to wave goodbye to NSW Swifts back in 2016, but I have no doubt that moving to Sunshine Coast Lightning was the right choice.

“My family is based in Queensland and I recognised the value of training under (Lightning coach) Noeline Taurua, so the move made perfect sense.

“I’d love to consolidate my spot in the Diamonds over the coming years and of course, will be working hard to try and secure back-to-back premierships.’’

The Lightning are coming off a 58-56 win over Collingwood last Saturday and can climb back into the top four if results go their way, and they put the last-placed Thunderbirds to the sword in emphatic fashion.

“We’re feeling confident and know it’s about getting in and getting the job done. It’s a big game,” Lightning assistant coach Kylee Byrne said.

“You can’t take the bottom of the ladder lightly and we’re aware Thunderbirds have got nothing to lose.’’
