Aussie man facing jail over Bali food stall assault

An Australian man is facing two years behind bars after being arrested in Bali for allegedly assaulting a man at a food stall.

Michael David Sode, 47, from Sydney, was taken into custody over allegations he attacked and punched Indonesian man Made Wena at Banjar Nyuh Kuning in Ubud.

Ubud Police said the alleged assault took place on Friday July 6 when the victim, Mr Wena, was visiting his son’s food stall, Warung Coconut.

Mr Wena told police while he was at the stall he saw three dogs come up and urinated on the food stall’s chair, coconut fruits and sofa. He said he recognised the dogs as belonging to Mr Sode.

Mr Wena called Mr Sode to complain about the dogs’ behaviour as he said Mr Sode’s dogs often urinate at his son’s food stall.

As the men were talking, Mr Wena said Mr Sode’s dogs again urinated on the food stall’s sofa. This caused Mr Wena to grab a nearby chair and attempt to strike the dogs.

Mr Sode then allegedly attacked and punched Mr Wena in his mouth, leaving him requiring two stitches.

“Based on the evidence, the victim suffers injury in the mouth, on 21 July Michael David was named as a suspect and detained,” Ubud police chief Made Raka Sugita told reporters.

The victim’s son, Putu Eka Suksma Ananda, told 9News Mr Sode has six or seven dogs and they regularly urinate on his food stall’s sofa and coconut fruits.

Mr Sode could face a maximum of two years and eight months jail if found guilty over the assault claims.
