EPL giants Manchester United considering WA soccer spectacular

THE State Government is in talks with English Premier League giants Manchester United to play Perth Glory in a pre-season blockbuster at Optus Stadium next year.

The move follows the successful four-day visit by Chelsea that ended in their 1-0 win over Glory in front of a crowd of 55,522 on Monday night.

United, the second-most valuable sports franchise in the world at $5.58 billion, according to Forbes, are being courted by Tourism WA.

Talks are in the preliminary stages, but involve player agent turned match promoter Lou Sticca, who was heavily involved in the Chelsea visit.

Tourism Minister Paul Papalia confirmed discussions had started with EPL clubs.

“We are always exploring options for events in the State, including international sporting fixtures for Optus Stadium, but discussions with other EPL clubs are in the early stages,” Papalia said.

“It is the first time we’ve hosted an international soccer team at Optus Stadium and the experience has given us some valuable insight for the future, such as holding this type of event in a World Cup year makes it difficult for clubs to confirm player lists.

“The Chelsea v Perth Glory match ... attracted a lot of valuable media attention across Australia and in the United Kingdom. The event attracted thousands of people from outside WA.

“Not only did the people of Perth embrace Chelsea FC, but the players and management team thoroughly enjoyed their time here and shared their experiences with millions of supporters through social media and online platforms.”

Glory owner Tony Sage has been approached about his club hosting another big-name rival.

“I’ve heard they are talking with one or two clubs. It all looks good for other big clubs to come,” Sage said.

“The stadium asked us if we would be interested in a repeat, maybe making this a yearly event with a club from overseas.

“They have not had formal talks with me or our club yet, probably not until they have got the other club stitched up and help from the State Government.”

The cost of hosting Chelsea has not been revealed, but it is understood to have been about $5 million, with Chelsea receiving a $3.5 million match payment and Glory about $500,000.

“It’s a massive cost ... I can’t really underwrite it,” Sage said.

“I’ve already underwritten Wolves, Fulham and Celtic and this is a lot bigger cost.

“The success (of the Chelsea visit) in the middle of an AFL season, on a Monday night, raining, a school night, shows there’s not going to be much of a (financial) risk.

“We didn’t take a large match fee. We were more interested in the promotion of the game.

“We’ll be 100 per cent supportive of any event in the future.

“It was a great opportunity for football in the State, a great opportunity for all football fans.

“It was fantastic to get that crowd. It was a brilliant night, brilliant for our brand and the Government should be very happy. The stadium was very happy.”
