US VP Mike Pence announces Space Force as sixth branch of military

PRESIDENT Trump is terribly proud of his new Space Force. He came up with the name himself. Now he wants you to help nail its logo.

There isn’t much time.

The creation of Space Force is being fast-tracked. It’s supposed to be fighting over our heads by 2020.

But details aside.

He’s put forward a choice of six possible new logos for the new, sixth arm of the US military.

One is the colour-reverse of NASA’s oconic red, white and blue symbol. It has the same orbital sweep, wavy arrow and starfield. It’s just that the background has been changed to a Soviet-style red and yellow. Oh, the name’s Space Force.

He came up with that name himself.

“I said, ‘maybe we need a new force, we’ll call it the Space Force,’ and I was not really serious. Then I said, ‘what a great idea,’ maybe we’ll have to do that,” he told a gathering of US Marines earlier this year.

“So think of that, Space Force … because we are spending a lot and we have a lot of private money coming in, tremendous … And our service members will be vital to ensuring America continues to lead the way into the stars.”

And he wants them to look dapper on the way.

Some look Jetsons-esque. Another is very loopy. And one has implications of interplanetary conquest.

Trump campaign manager Brad Parscale issued an email stating: “we have to make a final decision on the design we will use to commemorate President Trump’s new Space Force — and he (Trump) wants YOU to have a say.”

Trump took time out from the greens of his New Jersey golf club to tweet “Space Force all the way!” as Vice President Mike Pence took the stand to detail the new military arm.

SPACE FORCE UNVEILED
Plans to create a Space Force which would be the sixth branch of America’s military were unveiled by the Vice President overnight, saying the “time has come” to prepare for “the next battlefield.”

In June, US President Donald Trump “directed the Department of Defence to immediately begin the process necessary to establish a Space Force as the sixth branch of the armed forces,” Mr Pence said in a speech at the Pentagon.

The Pentagon’s existing military branches are: the Navy, Coast Guard, Marine Corps, Army and Air Force.

“The time has come to write the next great chapter in the history of our armed forces, to prepare for the next battlefield where America’s best and bravest will be called to deter and defeat a new generation of threats to our people, to our nation.

“The time has come to establish the United States Space Force.”

Mr Pence said the Space Force would be formed by 2020.

The creation of Space Force is not a done deal, as it first needs to be approved by Congress, and it has met with some scepticism from politicians and defence officials who are wary of the cost and added bureaucracy.

Currently, the Air Force oversees most space capabilities and there is some push back from officials who worry Space Force’s mission would be duplicative and create turf wars.

But Mr Pence said an independent Space Force was essential to counter Russia and China, which are “aggressively” working toward anti-satellite capabilities.

“China and Russia have been conducting highly sophisticated on-orbit activities that could enable them to manoeuvre their satellites into close proximity of ours, posing unprecedented new dangers to our space systems,” he said.

The White House said in a statement that “President Trump knows that space is integral to our American way of life and economic prosperity, and is a vital domain for national defence.”

NEXT STEPS
Mr Pence outlined a series of steps the Pentagon will undertake ahead of the creation of Space Force.

Key among these is the creation of US Space Command, a new organisational body that would draw in members of existing military branches.

The vast US military divides the globe into various commands, such as Central Command in the Middle East or Indo-Pacific Command in Asia, and so a new Space Command would be on an equal footing with these.

It would require a new headquarters and major organisational changes.

Defence Secretary Jim Mattis said this week that Mr Pence is Mr Trump’s “point man” for Space Force, and Pentagon officials are working closely with his office.

But just last year, Mr Mattis voiced scepticism on the need to create a separate Space Force.

In a letter to a US congressman, he said he did “not wish to add a separate service that would likely present a narrower and even parochial approach to space operations,” adding it would create extra bureaucracy and cost.

On Tuesday, however, the Pentagon chief said he fully supported the idea of creating a new US Space Command.

“We need to address space as a developing, war-fighting domain and a combatant command is certainly one thing that we can establish,” he said.
