Spring campaign goals on the line for Ef Troop in Doomben comeback

TONY Gollan is yet to lock in a plan for Ef Troop, who resumes on Saturday at Doomben a stronger version of the one that was rated one of last season’s top two-year-olds.

Ef Troop easily won a Doomben trial late last month and has been marked a $1.60 favourite with Ladbrokes to resume a winner on Saturday.

Gollan knows Ef Troop needs to win to justify some lofty spring targets.

“There’s a lot of options for him, but it’s very important to get through this run,” he said.

“You never want to go into a race cocky and he does have 60kg and a wide barrier, so it’s by no means going to be easy.

“But I do think he’s a special horse this bloke and I’m pretty keen to see him back at the races.

“He’s stronger now, but he’s not what you would describe as a big, heavy horse. He’s always been more of an athletic type.”

Stablemate Outback Barbie will gallop between races at Doomben on Saturday before a likely first-up run in next week’s Silver Shadow Stakes in Sydney, where Blake Shinn has been booked to ride.

Ef Troop is one of two beaten Magic Millions favourites resuming at Doomben.

The other is From Within, who started equal favourite when 13th behind Houtzen last year.

After starting with Chris Waller, she switched to Ed O’Rourke, before the latest move to Houtzen’s trainer Toby Edmonds.

She won a trial without being pressured at Doomben on July 31.

“The trial was good and she jumped out well at home before that, but with these type of horses, you want to see them do it under pressure,” Edmonds said.

“I am just a bit guarded until I see her on race day.”
