Kelly Rowland: 'Beyonce's Vogue cover shows girls of colour they're beautiful'

Kelly Rowland has praised Beyonce's U.S. Vogue cover for helping to show young girls of colour they are beautiful too.

The Lemonade hitmaker is the cover star of the fashion magazine's iconic September issue, and inside its pages she also opened up about her life in a candid personal essay.

And her friend and Destiny's Child bandmate shared her thoughts on why the Formation singer's appearance, the first black woman to grace U.S. Vogue's September issue, is significant to her, and in particular, girls who may not often see themselves reflected on the covers of such publications.

"I remember looking at a Vogue magazine cover and I saw three beautiful white women on the cover and it said, 'This is what beauty looks like.' If I'm not that colour how am I supposed to know what beauty looks like?" Kelly said to ET. "So when we see women of colour on magazine covers… (it shows) this is what beauty is like. We are what beauty is.

"I'm extremely excited for young girls of colour to see that and understand and know that (they) are beautiful.”

Beyonce's cover was a collaboration between the star and Vogue boss Anna Wintour, with the mother of three reportedly given the final say on everything from her stylists to the set.

She also selected 23-year-old Tyler Mitchell to shoot the cover, making him the first black photographer to ever do so in Vogue's 125-year history.

"I think that it speaks volumes about who she is because it wasn't about her in that moment," Kelly explained. "It was everyone else. We know who Beyonce is. I mean, of course, through that cover, but just as a woman, a black woman, and it's a beautiful thing, and that's what we celebrate."
