Doom Eternal is the next entry in the Doom franchise and it is already looking spectacular. While first-person shooters aren’t known for their mods but developers have hinted that Doom Eternal mod support will be a thing.

Speaking with PCGamesN, game director Director Marty Stratton talked about the Doom Eternal mod support and noted that it won’t be available at launch but added that the studio hasn’t closed that door forever.

He added that years ago the studio made some technical decisions with the game engine that focused on other stuff than mods and have been trying to correct it for past several years in order to bring Doom Eternal mod support.

It is a real, long-term initiative of ours to get back to where we can do that. Again, we’ve been making a lot of technical decisions that allow the tech – everything, the rendering, the way we do the gameplay, the way our levels are set up – really trying to make the game and the game code more flexible. Kind of put it in more components, and more data-driven in a lot of ways, which is how you get the mod content.

At a technical level id Software will be taking things further as the game will be targeting 60 FPS on consoles and it will be interesting to see how the devs will manage to do that with a game that is brimming with detail.

Speaking of the game, Bethesda has also explained why Doom Eternal isn’t called Doom 2.

According to Stratton, the reason behind it the game being Doom Eternal is Doom 2016 as the problem stems from there saying “You hear us say it all the time, we call it Doom 2016, and the internet has called it Doom 2016”.

Not only that, players will be able to invade other player’s game or make a party of demons and invade the game to hunt down the Doom Slayer.

However, if you don’t want anyone to invade your game then you can just disable the game invasion and play the game solo.

Doom Eternal is a first-person action game in development at id Software for PC, Xbox One and PlayStation 4. No release date has been announced for the game.
