Optus to cull 440 jobs as company moves to digitisation, automation

TELECOMMUNICATIONS giant Optus will cut 440 jobs as the company moves to digitisation and automation in a bid to remain competitive in the mobile market.

It is an attempt to improve efficiency and become a “world-class” digital service provider, an Optus spokeswoman said in a statement on Wednesday.

“As we continue to evolve the way we work, do business and fund future investments we are removing duplication, improving our operating efficiency and embracing next-generation technologies, like digitisation and automation to achieve this goal,” she said.

The telco says it is restructuring the company to become the “next-generation“ Optus.

It insists it will discuss redeployment opportunities with affected employees.

This round of cuts is in addition to the 400 jobs Optus made redundant in May as well as the 200 positions to be lost from its two-year phasing out of the Virgin Mobile brand.

The telco previously said the cuts are part of a “step-change to the way we work” to position the business to thrive “in our increasingly competitive and disruptive market”.
