Google may have two sets of Pixel 3 devices under development

Just recently, a complete review of Google’s Pixel 3 XL appeared online revealing essentially every last detail about the device down to the software features and even the pricing. But towards the end of the article, the reviewer revealed that Google has seven Pixel phones under development at the moment.

Unsurprisingly, two of the seven smartphones under development are the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL, while the remaining devices include four next-generation Pixels and a flexible screen prototype that is on track for a launch in 2020. In what seems to be a somewhat odd move, though, it’s claimed that two of the four next-generation devices will actually be ready in time for the Pixel 3 launch. In fact, production could theoretically begin next month if Google wishes to do so.

While externally the two devices in question are rumored to be similar to the Pixel 3 smartphones that have leaked so far, they are said to be based on a different chassis. Moreover, some significant improvements are included such as face and iris scanning up front, an improved in-ear speaker that doubles as a stereo one, and a dual-camera setup on the rear that reportedly includes new AI enhancements. Additionally, the device itself is rumored to support a new generation of VR that will launch next year. Also reported are new touch buttons just like the ones seen on the frame of the HTC U12+ and an improved Qualcomm processor and graphics card.

Considering the sheer number of leaks surrounding the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL, it seems unlikely Google will scrap the smartphones at the last minute and replace them with the seemingly superior models. Instead, the internet giant may be preparing an update halfway through this generation that will take advantage of the Snapdragon 855 and 5G networks. Although at this point, this is purely speculation.

Regardless of what Google does choose to do so, though, the final decision will reportedly happen within the next few weeks in order to be ready for its annual hardware event on October 4 where it will unveil its new Pixel smartphones and multiple other products and accessories.
