The Cure announce first tour dates of 2019

After a busy 2018, the band are already looking forward to their schedule for next year

The Cure will headline Rock On The Lawns Festival in South Africa next year – their first confirmed live dates for 2019.

Playing first on The Festival Lawns at Carnival City, Johannesburg on March 16, the iconic indie rock band will also play at Kenilworth Racecourse in Cape Town a few days later on March 21. This will be the first time that the band have performed in South Africa.

Speaking about the band coming to South Africa, AMP Events founder Andy Mac said he was “delighted” that The Cure were on the festival’s line up.

“This is the second Rock on the Lawns festival experience we’ve created in South Africa… it’s a fantastic day out with your mates enjoying great bars, great food and of course, world-class live artists all in a comfortable, relaxed environment. Last year we brought Pixies out as our headliner and the response was terrific.”

He added: “The Cure has been very high on my list of acts to bring to fans here for a long time, and I’m delighted that we’ve finally managed to make it happen!”

As part of the band’s fortieth anniversary celebrations, Robert Smith curated and played at this year’s acclaimed Meltdown festival and headlined a gig at BST Hyde Park.

Speaking about the Hype Park gig, NME described it as “pure perfection”, adding: “With Smith’s voice as strong and pure as it has ever been over the last four decades and the band clearly revelling in the joy of just playing, you sense that you’re witnessing that rare feat of a band perhaps entering their prime rather than their twilight years.”
